Hawthorn blood-red

Spiny shrub or small tree up to 4 m in height.

Shoots purple-brown shiny straight thick spines to 2.5 cm long petiolate leaves are alternate, obovate, 3 -7- lobed, toothed on the edge: dark green above, light below. The flowers are white and pink, in corymbose inflorescences. It flowers in May - June, fruits ripen in September and October. The fruits are oblong, blood-red or orange, fleshy, powdery pulp.

Hawthorn grows well and bears fruit in the undergrowth of deciduous and mixed forests, on the margins, on the banks of rivers and ravines, valleys and mountain slopes. Propagated by seeds, shoots from the stump, root suckers and layering. Demanders to soils, but grows best in fresh, fertile soils. Winter-resistant, drought-resistant, makes shading, thrives in the open field. In culture it bred as an ornamental and fruit plants, to create a dense, impenetrable hedges.

The fruits are eaten fresh or processed. From the dried and ground fruits of hawthorn prepared flour from which the bread is baked sweet.
The fruits are going to prepare a surrogate coffee and tea as well as jelly and jam.

Hawthorn berries contain a volatile oil, a bitter substance krategin, tannins, krategusovuyu acid, tannic acid, citric acid and oleanolic acid, carotene, vitamin C.

Therapeutic use of hawthorn
* When nervous disorders, hypertension and cardiac neurosis use water infusion of hawthorn. It is made from a mixture of the fruit of the hawthorn - 4 parts, motherwort - 4 parts, chamomile - Part 1.
1 tablespoon of the mixture pour 1 cup of boiling water, infused for 2 hours.
Take 1 tablespoon 3 times a day.

* In atherosclerosis, tachycardia, arrhythmias, insomnia, takes a decoction of fruit: 100 g of fruits are crushed, boiled for 30 minutes on low heat in 0.5 liters of water.
Drink 50-100 g of 3 times a day.
A decoction with sugar - a remedy for headaches.

By eating hawthorn berries, remember that in large quantities, they cause mild poisoning.
